Why See Oregon Symphony - Beethoven's Emperor Concerto?
Conduced by Alexander Soddy
Straddling the divide between the Classical and Romantic era, Beethoven's sublime final concerto marks his genius with a focused tenderness and beauty despite the tumult of the time it was composed in. In stark contrast, it was committed to paper as Napoleon's troops entered Vienna, and considering Beethoven's view on the diminutive Frenchman, he might not have been very impressed by its posthumous nickname.
Similarly magnificent is the program's other highlight - Bruckner's Seventh Symphony. His best known work, it veers between fantastical and inspiring and is reported to have come to him (at least partly) in a dream.
Opening night: 17 November 2018
