The Great Divorce

The Great Divorce at Newmark Theatre

Why see The Great Divorce?

a journey like no other

C.S Lewis' fantastical tale of a bus ride from Hell to Heaven has proved popular with secular and religious critics alike. Following in the footsteps of Lewis' Screwtape Letters, we see a group of provocative characters tell a fantastical morality tale about good and evil, and how different people view Heaven and Hell according to their own experiences and prejudices.

Three actors transform into over a dozen characters to illustrate Lewis fantastical allegory about good and evil. On this journey we see a man going to demand his rights, a complaining woman, a gentleman resents giving up his pet lizard to stay in Heaven and a traveler who believes Heaven and Hell are just a propaganda stunt, conveniently run by the same people.

As each character is welcomed by a heavenly being, they are each given a choice; to stay, or to go back? This conundrum brings vivid clarity to the "great divorce" between Heaven and Hell. Or is the gulf as wide as we suspect?
