The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Portland Opera present a new staging of Stephen Sondheim's bloody tale of revenge. Baritone David Pittsinger, a regular on both Broadway and opera house stages, heads the cast, while George Manahan conducts. The story follows barber Sweeney Todd on his return to London after fifteen years of false imprisonment. Determined to exact murderous revenge on the corrupt judge who sent him away, Sweeney reopens his old barbershop and begins sharpening his razors...

The show debuted on Broadway in 1979, where it scooped up an incredible eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It's since been adapted for the screen by Tim Burton and entered into the repertoire for opera company's the world over, thanks to its weighty ratio of singing to spoken word dialogue.
