Gil Shaham displays his virtuosity on Tchaikovsky's violin concerto
The Oregon Symphony are joined by virtuosic violinist Gil Shaham to perform Tchaikovsky's timeless and only Violin Concerto. An enduring lyrical masterpiece, the piece is one of the composers' most beloved across the globe and famed for its technical difficulty, able to be performed by only the most skilled violinists. Gil Shaham demonstrates the mastery it takes to nail it, effortlessly playing the piece that was once deemed 'unplayable'.
Written in 1878 in a Swiss resort following the breakdown of his marriage, the Violin Concerto is considered a welcome addition to the composer's oeuvre and despite its difficulties for players, has gone on to become a popular request in the repertoire.
