Why see Oregon Symphony - Brahms 2 - Moments in Light and Darkness?
Brahms' Evocative Second
Join Oregon Symphony for a rousing performance of Johannes Brahms' marvelous second symphony, as well two works by Andy Akiho, the Symphony's composer in residence: Steel Pan Concerto No. 1 and a premiere of Nisei: Concerto for Cello and Chamber Orchestra. A true jewel in the Romantic orchestral canon, Brahms' second was composed in beautiful Austria in 1877, with the surroundings clearly evidenced in the playfulness of the piece.
The range of light and dark atmospheres across the four movements jump between melodies reminiscent of joyous folk dances, haunting love pieces or triumphant climaxes, all leading towards a rich and sophisticated masterpiece which is rightly beloved in the world of classical music.
