Why See Portland Opera - La Cenerentola?
Rossini's Celebrated Cinderella
Cinderella is transported to Italy in Rossini's celebrated tragicomedy La Cenerentola. Considered to bear some of the finest writing for solo voices and ensembles, the celebrated dramma giocoso will enchant audiences of all ages with its heart-warming tale of true love and kindness. Resident artist and mezzo soprano Kate Farrar stars in the titular role of Angelina/Cenerentola, lending her dulcet tones to the opera's famous arias and duets including Non Piu Mesta.
Written in 1817, a year after the resounding success of The Barber Of Seville, the story follows the classic plot, interjected with stylised humour and buffoonery. Cinderella's step-mother is replaced by bumbling step-father Don Magnifico, who turns a blind eye to the torturous machinations of her cruel step-sisters Clorinda and Tisbe. Yet her happy ever after awaits in the form of a handsome prince...
