Bizet's sweltering tale of lust set under the Spanish sun
As part of the 50th Anniversary celebrations, Portland Opera present a new staging of George Bizet's finest work, Carmen. Mezzo-Soprano Sandra Piques Eddy will take on the title role, a part she's already played to great acclaim across the States as well as the UK. In their review of Lyric Opera's 2010 staging, The Kansas City Star said that she struck "a sexy balance of physical elegance and visceral appetites". Eric Einhorn directs and the conductor is George Manahan.
Set in the blaze of the Spanish heat in 19th Century Seville, Carmen is the provocative Gyspy woman, whose short temper brings her to the attention of the kind and charismatic Don Jose, who falls head over heels in love with her. An intense tale of love found and ruthlessly taken, Carmen is one of Opera's most intense and passionate pieces.
